Summary
Kiki Kaikai is a whimsical top‑down shooter that drops you into a mythic Feudal‑Japan backdrop. You play as a Shinto shrine maiden who wards off renegade yokai with o‑fuda scrolls and a gohei purification wand, swinging or launching attacks in eight directions. Enemies scatter paper slips that act as power‑up upgrades, but the maiden falls after a single hit, forcing a continuation from a preset checkpoint. Each stage culminates in a larger spirit boss that tests both mobility and timing. The game was crafted by Taito’s Hisaya Yabusaki, who married classic Japanese mythology with the era’s arcade shooter sensibility, branding it a “lovely action game” with an exotic Asian vibe. In Japan it vaulted to second‑place in table‑arcade earnings for November 1986 and ranked tenth overall in 1987.
Storyline
KiKi KaiKai (known in the West as Pocky & Rocky) follows Sayo‑chan, a young Shinto shrine maiden living in feudal Japan.
One night while fanning a ceremonial fire, the Seven Lucky Gods appear and warn her of an imminent danger.
A mischievous band of youkai then kidnaps the gods and retreats to a distant mountain range, prompting Sayo‑chan to embark on a quest across the countryside.
Along the way she confronts strange creatures from Japanese mythology, including obake and yurei, as she strives to rescue the divine protectors.
