Summary

Ibara is a vertical scrolling shooter that echoes 8ing’s Battle Garegga and Battle Bakraid. It mixes old‑school biplanes with futuristic machines, and the power‑up plus medal‑collect system drives scores sky‑high. Bombs are earned similarly, with a noticeable launch delay, and the HUD scrolls the stage name and music title.

The standout mechanic is the real‑time Rank system, a hidden difficulty gauge that rises as you collect items and rack up damage. Enemies stay constant, but bullet streams thicken dramatically. In the original, dying is the only way to pull Rank down, and fewer lives mean slower drops. Black Label adds bomb‑cancelling to lower Rank, though the meter can climb from zero to max in seconds. Riding this wave makes every death a tactical decision.

Programmer Shinobu Yagawa—renowned for Battle Garegga and Recca—helped craft Ibara, which explains its familiar feel. Cave released the arcade version in 2005, then the limited‑run Ibara Kuro: Black Label in early 2006, bringing extra modes first seen on the PS2 port. Retro fans still point to its relentless bullet density and rank‑play as genre milestones.
