Summary

Haunted Castle, the Konami arcade sequel to VS. Castlevania, expands the gothic formula with a handful of tightly‑designed stages that feel more like a sprint than a trek. You still slash as Simon Belmont, but the whip can morph into a spiked morning star and later a sword simply by crushing the right foes—something that adds a burst of strategic depth in a game where only one sub‑weapon—bombs, boomerangs, stopwatches, crosses or torches—may be active at a time.

Each level caps off with an iconic boss such as Medusa, Frankenstein’s monster or, of course, Dracula, forcing quick pattern reading under the pressure of limited continues. The cabinet runs on Konami’s own JAMMA‑compatible board, and different board codes (M, K, J) tweak the difficulty curve dramatically, a rare nod to arcade operators.

Thanks to Kenichi Matsubara’s haunting tracks like “Bloody Tears” and “Clockwork’s Beat,” the soundtrack lives on in many later Castlevania remixes, and the game has resurfaced on modern platforms from the PlayStation 4 Arcade Archives to the Switch re‑release.

Storyline

In the arcade classic Haunted Castle, you step into the boots of Simon Belmont. The legendary vampire hunter sets out on a daring quest to rescue his beloved wife, Selena, who has been seized by the dreaded Dracula. Traversing eerie corridors and battling supernatural foes, Simon must navigate the castle’s haunted halls to confront the Count himself. The game’s simple yet tense action captures the urgency of a husband’s love against a backdrop of gothic terror.
