Summary

Guwance is a tight, bullet‑hell shooter that stays true to its niche of extreme vertical scrolling action with occasional lateral or diagonal stretches. The standout mechanic is the ‘shikigami’ power‑up which lets you re‑direct enemy bullets, turning overwhelming screens into opportunities for stylish runs. Scoring hinges on stringing together endless chains of collectible coins while a timer forces relentless pace, a system that keeps repeat play insatiable for score‑chasers. A roster of distinctive bosses—such as the cyber‑punk dragon MegaMukas in stage 2 and the samurai‑sleeve duo Sukenouji & Magira in stage 5—showcases sharp sprite animation, and special “blue‑label” cabinets were limited to the three highest‑scoring rivals at a 1999 contest. Later releases, including a challenging anniversary version at the 2007 Cave Fest and a dedicated arcade cabinet, keep the title active in the retro-collector scene.

Storyline

The story of Guwange is set in Japan’s Muromachi period, a time when people become possessed by shikigami that grant great spiritual powers but doom the host to die after one year.

Legend says that if a shikigami‑possessed individual can collect the five talismans of the Chinese elements—wood, fire, earth, metal, water—from the five demons serving Guwange and then infiltrate Mt. Gokumon (Hell Gate) to slay Guwange, the shikigami will be destroyed and the host will avoid premature death.

Playable characters each have their own backstory: Shishin, 35, hosts the ancient shikigami Rikiou and has survived by feeding humans to the spirit; Kamono Gensuke, 15, is a pharmacist’s son possessed by the tengu Kirinmaru and works as a bounty hunter; Hiiragi Kosame, 17, a miko haunted by the kitsune Yatsuhisha, is tasked by her father to exorcise herself by destroying Guwange. Each character receives a unique introduction and ending after completing the game.
