Summary
Gunbird 2 throws players into a zany treasure hunt for the Sun, Moon and Stars, with the promise of an Almighty Potion from the Potion God. Seven outlandish pilots—Marion the wizard, German student Tavia, vampire Alucard, Russian robot Valpiro, Arabian heavyweight Hei‑Cob, and a mysterious naked samurai—each chase the elements while the game’s humor tops even the original. The arcade classic, released in 1998, follows a vertical‑scrolling shooter formula but adds Psikyo’s first medal‑chaining system, rewarding repeated 2 000‑point medals with a separate coin chain.
After a first loop of seven stages (three chosen randomly) a solo player can make a wish for a magic potion, unlocking a unique ending; two‑player runs trigger combination endings. The second loop ups bullet density and speed, and the bizarre final boss is a cartoon elephant playing a trumpet, echoing the Parodius vibe.
Modern ports on Steam let you tweak difficulty, continues and screen orientation and even compete on online rankings, while the original arcade board supported English and Japanese via dip‑switch.
Storyline
Gunbird 2 spins a comical tale centered on an ancient magical potion. The game’s intermission and boss encounters are peppered with dialogue demos that add humor and personality to the action.
Seven warriors are summoned to embark on a quest for three powerful elements: the Sun, the Moon, and the Stars. Their mission is to retrieve these celestial fragments and present them to the deity who set the challenge.
Success brings the legendary Almighty Potion, granting its bearer unrivaled magical powers. In two‑player mode the character banter shifts, giving each playthrough a fresh, playful twist on the story.
