Summary
Guerrilla War, known as Guevara in Japan, is a classic SNK overhead run‑and‑gun that dropped into arcades in 1987. Its twin‑stick control—thanks to an eight‑way rotary joystick—let players move one way while spraying in another, a gimmick popularized by Ikari Warriors. You command a pair of nameless guerrilla fighters (the Japanese version cheekily references Che Guevara and Fidel Castro) as they storm a Caribbean island under a tyrannical ruler, rescuing hostages and looting enemy gear, all while dodging relentless troops. The game earned moderate success, prompting ports to several home systems and landing in the SNK 40th Anniversary Collection. More recently Hamster’s Arcade Archives repackaged it for Switch and PS4 in 2021, letting today’s retro fans relive its frantic two‑player mayhem.
Storyline
Guerrilla War drops players into a chaotic Caribbean island where two rebel commandos fight to overthrow a nameless tyrant. In the original arcade version the protagonists are unnamed, while the Japanese release identifies them as Che Guevara and Fidel Castro. The mission is simple: blast through waves of enemy soldiers, free hostages, and avoid the heavy score penalty for any civilian casualties. Along the way you can pick up weapons dropped by fallen troops and even take control of a tank to smash through fortified positions. The game’s relentless pace and the constant push to rescue captives give the classic run‑and‑gun formula a gritty, guerrilla‑style flavor.
