Summary

Gorf arrived in the arcade cabinets of early 1981 as a fixed‑shooter that immediately stood out for its synthesized‑speech robot taunts and five completely different mission types. The ship glides across the lower third of the screen, firing a steady vertical “quark laser,” while the game’s rank system advances from Space Cadet to Space Avenger, cranking up speed and enemy patterns after each full cycle.

The first mission mimics Space Invaders, complete with a protective parabola field. The second challenges you with dive‑bombing formations that break off from a hovering fleet, followed by a Galaxian‑style swarm, an alien worm‑hole where foes pour out of a hyperspace circle, and finally a colossal Flag Ship that drops bombs and must be hit between its twin cores.

Players could purchase up to seven extra lives before the run, and an extra life is awarded after clearing all five stages. Its cabinet sported a pistol‑grip fire button and lit‑panel rank indicators, while the speech chip delivered snappy lines like “Long live Gorf!”—making Gorf one of the first arcade games to combine multi‑level gameplay with voice synthesis, a legacy still remembered by retro fans.

Storyline

In Gorf, you take the helm of an unnamed Interstellar Space Force starship tasked with halting the iron‑fisted Empire of GORF before it can conquer Earth. The opening stage, called Astro Battles, pits you against the invaders in a dogfight over our home planet. After clearing the atmosphere, the campaign pushes you deeper into the galaxy, with each mission taking you farther from Earth.

The climax pits you against the GORFian Flag Ship, the empire’s massive flagship whose core must be destroyed to end the invasion. This final boss fight mirrors the iconic trench‑run from Star Wars, giving the showdown a cinematic feel. Defeating the flagship secures the galaxy and saves Earth from the GORF threat.
