Summary
Garou: Mark of the Wolves (often just called Garou) marked a bold restart for SNK’s Fatal Fury line when it hit Neo Geo arcades in 1999. The game discards the old lane‑switching system for a single‑plane stage, letting fighters focus on fluid combos and timing.
Its signature T.O.P. (Tactical Offensive Position) system lets you lock a health window before a match; entering that range triggers a damage‑boosted attack, gradual health recovery, and unique visual flair. A perfectly timed block activates Just Defend, awarding a small heal and an immediate counter. The later‑added Breaking mechanic rewards aggressive pressure by opening the opponent’s guard.
Players can choose from fourteen characters—including newcomer Rock Howard and a refreshed Terry Bogard—and test them in Arcade mode’s ranking battles, then duel friends via Steam’s Invite‑a‑Friend lobby. A dedicated Training mode helps you perfect combos, while Leaderboards track your scores across worldwide wolves. Adjustable video, control and audio settings let you fine‑tune the experience.
Critics hailed the title for its striking sprite work, deep yet approachable system, and soundtrack, often comparing it to Street Fighter III. Even years later it tops many SNK fighting‑game lists, proving the new mechanics still feel fresh for both veterans and newcomers.
Storyline
Garou: Mark of the Wolves drops players ten years after Geese Howard’s death, when South Town has settled into a rare peace. Terry Bogard is now raising Geese’s son, Rock Howard, and the two receive a mysterious invitation to a new King of Fighters tournament.
The event, called “King of Fighters: Maximum Mayhem,” is being held in the neighboring city of Second Southtown. Fighters from the old era and a host of fresh faces—such as B. Jenet, Freeman, Gato, and the young prodigy Hokutomaru—enter the fray, many of them linked to previous KOF combatants.
Rock emerges as the champion and learns that the tournament’s mastermind, Kain R. Heinlein, is connected to his late mother, Marie. Kain created the contest to draw his nephew in and to uncover the meaning behind Geese’s legacy, prompting Rock to join him at the story’s close.
