Summary

Stepping into the R‑360 version of G‑LOC: Air Battle was like being strapped to a fighter that could spin on a gyroscope, and I literally felt the G‑force loss of consciousness the title mentions. The cabinet’s two‑axis rotation turned dogfights into a visceral whirl of missiles and cannon fire. In the arcade you start with a basic loadout – a forward‑firing cannon and lock‑on missiles – and the timer ticks down until you either wreck the plane or run out of time. Hitting mission targets, from enemy jets to armored tanks, grants extra seconds and replenishes weapons, letting you choose whether to go for aerial combat or ground destruction.

Three arcade configurations existed, but only the deluxe R‑360 gave that full‑body motion; the sit‑down and upright cabinets offered a more traditional joystick feel. After its arcade splash, the title migrated to the Mega Drive/Genesis, Master System, Game Gear and a slew of home computers, with each version sneaking in its own quirks, like perspective flips on the Mega Drive or upgrade points on the Game Gear. In 2020 the game resurfaced on the Nintendo Switch through Sega Ages, adding modern control schemes while preserving the original stages. Critics praised its graphics and added depth compared to After Burner, and it topped arcade charts worldwide, cementing its place as a standout flight sim of the early ’90s.

Storyline

In G-LOC: Air Battle, you pilot an experimental Japanese fighter designated A8M5, which receives upgrades throughout the sortie and ultimately becomes the more powerful A8M6. The core mission is to hunt down and destroy waves of enemy aircraft that can strike you from both the front and the rear. As the combat intensifies, the game throws increasingly tough opponents at you.

Key boss encounters include a massive War Balloon, a heavily armed Bomber, and finally an enemy ace flying a mirror version of your own plane, but with reinforced armor and firepower. This ace serves as the ultimate test of skill, demanding precise maneuvering and relentless fire. Defeating these foes marks the completion of the aerial campaign.
