Summary
Frisky Tom is a quirky arcade puzzle‑action game where you crawl through a maze of plumbing to keep a shower supplied with water. I’m always juggling loose pipe segments while purple mice dash in to knock them loose, jump on my head, or even plant a bomb that can collapse the whole system. The water level in the tank drains steadily, and any leak eats away at a bonus counter that adds to your score when the level ends.
The title first showed up in Japanese arcades in 1981 and reached North America a few months later, later popping up as a VFD handheld from Bandai in 1982 and a Game Boy port in 1995. Though a 1983 Atari 5200 version was programmed, it never saw the light of day, while modern retro collections have revived it for PlayStation, Switch and PS4 via Hamster’s Arcade Archives.
The single four‑direction joystick gives you just enough control to feel the urgency without overwhelming complexity, and losing a life to a mouse or exploding bomb keeps the tension high until the water runs out.
Storyline
In Frisky Tom you play as Tom, a plumber tasked with keeping a network of pipes intact so water can travel from a storage tank to a shower. Three mischievous mouse types try to sabotage the system: yellow mice that can be knocked off safely until they turn purple after loosening a joint, and white mice that attempt to light the bomb’s fuse. The mice knock joints loose, create leaks, and even set a bomb to blow up the tank, forcing Tom to act quickly. Tom must climb the pipes, retrieve the dropped joints, and snap them back into place to stop the flow from spilling.
The bomb’s fuse burns down steadily, and the white mice keep trying to ignite it, so Tom also has to extinguish the fuse before it reaches the tank. Each mouse behaves differently, adding a layer of strategy as Tom balances repairing leaks, avoiding dangerous purple mice, and defusing the bomb to protect the shower’s water supply.
