Summary

Final Fight bursts onto the arcade scene as a classic side‑scrolling beat‑'em‑up that lets you pick one of three very different fighters—former mayor‑turned‑wrestler Mike Haggar, street‑wise Cody Travers, or the ninja‑style Guy. Each hero feels distinct: Haggar can swing a massive piledriver during grabs, Cody tosses knives at rapid pace and Guy vaults off walls into a soaring side‑kick. The controls are simple yet deep, with an eight‑way stick, an attack and a jump button; pressing both at once fires a risky special attack that damages everything nearby but nibbles your health, and joystick‑reverse throws can hurl enemies into each other for extra smash.

The game spans six gritty Metro City rounds—slums, subways, and more—plus two bonus stages, each bounded by a countdown and a unique boss, finishing with a showdown against gang‑leader Belger. Throughout the levels you can break barrels or drums to uncover limited‑use weapons and health items, while the two‑player mode invites a buddy to tackle the crime spree together.

Behind the scenes, the project began as a Street Fighter sequel before morphing into its own franchise, and it turned out to be a massive commercial hit, topping U.S. arcade conversion kits in 1990 and selling 30,000 units worldwide.

Storyline

Final Fight drops players into the fictional Metro City, an Atlantic‑coast metropolis where crime has spiked despite Mayor Mike Haggar’s efforts. Haggar, a former pro wrestler turned mayor, sees his city’s peace shattered when the Mad Gear gang, led by the corrupt businessman Belger, kidnaps his young daughter Jessica to force his compliance. Enraged, Haggar recruits Cody Travers—Jessica’s boyfriend and a skilled fighter—and Guy, a ninja‑in‑training and Cody’s friend‑rival, to mount a rescue. The trio battles through Metro City’s slums, subways and other districts, taking on waves of gang thugs and distinctive bosses. Their campaign culminates in a showdown with Belger himself, ending with Jessica’s rescue and the Mad Gear gang’s defeat.
