Summary

ESP Ra.De., developed by Cave, is the studio's first shoot‑em‑up that stepped away from the DonPachi lineage and debuted in Japanese arcades in 1998, quickly topping Game Machine’s popularity charts.

What really sets it apart is the power‑gauge shield. Holding the shield button makes the player invincible while turning incoming bullets into gold blocks, and releasing it fires a massive psychic blast. The mechanic created a high‑risk, high‑reward loop that reviewers still point to as unique among bullet‑hells.

Visually the game benefited from Junya Inoue’s debut as art director, delivering a vivid sci‑fi aesthetic and striking character designs. Composer Masahiro Kusunoki added a memorable soundtrack, later issued on a Japan‑only album alongside DoDonPachi tracks.

Despite its arcade success, the title never received an official home‑console port due to rights tangled with Atlus, making original cabinets a treasured find for collectors. Its legacy lived on through the Espgaluda series, which borrowed only its name and lead programmer.

Storyline

ESP Ra.De., the arcade shooter, is set in the year 2018, with the action taking place in a futuristic Tokyo. The city is under threat from a powerful ESPer named Lady Garra. She leads the Yaksa syndicate, a criminal organization bent on seizing control.

Players choose one of three ESPers, each equipped with psychic abilities, to stop her. The chosen hero must battle through waves of enemies and dismantle the syndicate’s plans. The ultimate goal is to overthrow Lady Garra and prevent the Yaksa takeover of Tokyo.
