Summary
Dynasty Wars pulls you into the chaos of the Three Kingdoms, letting you ride a horse‑charged Chinese warrior straight from the Tenchi o Kurau manga into wave after wave of infantry and archers. Up to two players can pick from four era‑authentic generals, each with distinct strength, stamina and a partner who shows up for a powerful joint attack.
The three‑button layout keeps the combat intuitive: strike left, strike right, or unleash a tactical move. Collecting yellow orbs after each stage grants experience that raises health, while every third blue orb upgrades your weapon. Food packs restore vitality and hidden treasure pads the score, and feeding more coins into the cabinet can even boost your maximum life before you start.
Originally an arcade hit in 1989, the game soon landed on ZX Spectrum, Amstrad CPC, Amiga, Atari ST, Commodore 64 and, later, the PC‑Engine Super CD‑ROM² with full intro cut‑scenes. Although a Power System Changer version never surfaced, the title topped Japan’s table‑arcade charts in May 1989, cementing its place in beat‑em‑up history.
Storyline
The year is 184 AD, and the Han Dynasty has been toppled by ruthless warlords who ravage the countryside with swords as their only language. Violence reigns and the people are left in desperate turmoil.
Based on Hiroshi Motomiya’s manga Tenchi wo Kurau, Dynasty Wars reenacts the clash between the Kingdom of Shu and the Yellow Turban rebels during this chaotic period. Players must eradicate the Huang Ching organization and later confront the tyrant Dong Zhuo, freeing each province by defeating the rebel general in every stage.
Four courageous warriors unite to challenge the warlords, and you become one of them, fighting to restore the Han Dynasty to its rightful place of power.
