Summary

Tower of Doom lets you pick one of four archetypes—a balanced fighter with the most health, a close‑range dwarf whose combo speed crushes enemies, an elf wielding a sword and seven arcane spells, or a cleric who can turn undead and shield vertical attacks. The control panel sports four buttons, letting you block, dash, turn attacks, or unleash a strong strike, and the game rewards precise crouches and evasion as much as button‑mashing.

At a crossroads the screen forces you to choose a path; each branch leads to a different cavern and you can’t see them all in one run, so I always try a new route on every visit. Throwing daggers, hammers, arrows or burning oil adds a tactical layer, while magical rings let both spellcasters cast their repertoire—Fireball, Polymorph, Hold Person, and more.

The boss roster reads like a D&D monster guide: a regenerating troll that must be burned, a black dragon, the drow‑style Shadow Elf, a beholder, the optional Flamewing great wyrm, and finally the arch‑lich Deimos. In the U.S., the arcade was topping RePlay’s popularity charts, and reviewers praised its length, non‑linear design, and faithful D&D flavor.

Storyline

Dungeons & Dragons: Tower of Doom (often just called Tower of Doom) drops players into the besieged Republic of Darokin on the world of Mystara. Monsters pour into the countryside, threatening towns and trade routes.

Four brave adventurers answer the call, first clearing out hotspots and rescuing civilians. Their efforts draw the attention of merchant lord Corwyn Linton, who commissions them to trace the source of the assaults. Their investigation uncovers that the Arch Lich Deimos is pulling the strings.

The party follows Deimos’ trail to his ominous stronghold, the Tower of Doom. Inside, they battle undead minions and arcane traps before confronting the lich himself. In the final showdown they shatter Deimos and end the siege on Darokin.
