Summary
Double Dragon II, often just called Double Dragon II, swaps the original’s punch and kick buttons for two direction‑based attack buttons – Left Attack and Right Attack – a layout borrowed from Renegade. Pressing the button that matches the direction you’re facing unleashes a rapid punch combo, while the opposite button triggers a back kick. The game also adds a few fresh moves, most notably the Hurricane Kick that launches the player into a spinning assault. This control overhaul makes the combat feel tighter and more responsive than its predecessor.
The arcade adventure is split into four distinct missions – a bustling heliport, a lumber‑filled storehouse, a wheat‑field farm, and the gang’s new hideout – each guarded by its own themed boss. Along the way you’ll run into familiar faces like Williams, Roper and Linda, but also new foes such as the hulking masked Burnov, the goggles‑wearing Abore, and the stick‑wielding Chin Taimei, all of whom can pick up shovels, knives, chain‑whips or even steel balls to hurl at you. A timer counts down and a life meter drains with each hit, so falling off the screen or into spikes costs a life. After the final boss Willy falls, the game throws a mirror‑image of your own character at you – the Doppelganger – who can copy every move and even fire projectiles. The difficulty spikes noticeably compared with the first title, giving the sequel a tougher edge.
Arcade cabinets came in both 19‑inch and 25‑inch dedicated monitors, and the board was designed to accept quick swaps with any JAMMA‑compatible horizontal game using an 8‑way stick and up to three buttons. In North America the machine was licensed to ROMSTAR for manufacture and distribution. This flexibility helped the game spread quickly across US and Canadian arcades. The result is a classic beat‑‘em‑up that feels both familiar and freshly challenging.
Storyline
The arcade sequel Double Dragon II: The Revenge opens with a grim twist – Marian, the heroine rescued in the first game, is shot dead by the leader of the Black Warriors. Set a year after the original, brothers Billy and Jimmy Lee return to the streets, this time driven by vengeance rather than rescue. Their quest takes them through four distinct stages, each filled with the gang’s thugs and mid‑level bosses.
In the final stage the Lee brothers confront Willy, the Big Boss of the Black Warriors, and defeat him. The victory triggers a last showdown against the Doppelganger, a shadowy clone of the player’s character, serving as the game’s ultimate challenge.
