Summary

When I first stumbled onto DonPachi, the original vertical manic shooter from Cave, the sheer density of bullets instantly reminded me why the genre feels like a dance. The arcade version throws you into forested battlefields dotted with military trucks and towering robots, ending with an oversized mechanical bee that buzzes menacingly across the screen.

At launch you pick one of three weapon configurations, each growing stronger as you collect color‑coded power‑ups, and the game rewards rapid chains of destruction with its Get Point System, inflating the score as combos stack. The ship also switches between rapid taps for normal shots and a held‑down beam that narrows fire at the cost of speed.

All five stages can be looped; the second pass cranks up bullet speed, adds suicide bullets, and after beating the bee you unlock a secret area that showcases the series' trademark “Hachi” boss. A subtle ranking mechanic nudges the bullet streams faster the better you play, though the U.S. arcade release softened the rank and even refilled bombs after each stage.

The title later made it onto the Sega Saturn and PlayStation in 1996, bringing that intense arcade feel to home consoles.

Storyline

DonPachi follows a pilot who must survive an eight‑year training mission to prove his worth as a fighter and earn a place in the elite DonPachi Squadron. The test is presented as a series of increasingly difficult aerial battles.

Unbeknownst to him, the enemies he faces are actually his own comrades disguised as foes, sacrificing themselves so that only the most skilled pilots can pass. This deception turns each encounter into a brutal evaluation of skill.

After completing the first loop, the commander orders the pilot to keep fighting his fellow troop members until one side is completely destroyed. A second loop begins seven years later, repeating the deadly cycle.

When the pilot finally defeats the series‑trademark boss Hachi, the commander’s true purpose is revealed: to transform the army into a race of super‑soldiers. The relentless aerial attacks force many soldiers to take the battle into the sky, sacrificing lives. The mission is deemed a success, and the DonPachi Squadron is officially formed.
