Summary

Donkey Kong 3 flips the classic platform formula on its head by putting an exterminator named Stanley in the spotlight. Instead of jumping over barrels, I’m spraying bug spray at the ape and a swarm of insects while trying to keep five delicate flowers safe in the greenhouse.

The core loop is oddly satisfying: aim the repellent at Donkey Kong to force him upward, or blast the buzzing critters—buzzbees, queen Beespies, inchworms, Kabutomushi beetles, and butterflies—before they snatch the blossoms. A limited‑time Super Sprayer drops from the vines when I push Kong past a certain point, sending him soaring faster. An extra life pops up at 50,000 points, and after that the game shifts into a relentless "survival of the fittest" mode.

Arcade cabinets for DK3 look just like other Nintendo machines of the era, and the conversion board can be swapped with Donkey Kong or Donkey Kong Junior. It even uses the same sound chip as the NES, giving the game a familiar yet distinct audio feel.

Storyline

Donkey Kong 3 drops the ape into Stanley’s greenhouse garden, where he perches in the rafters and provokes swarms of bugs. The insects emerge and threaten to eat the five flowers Stanley is trying to protect. Armed with a sprayer of bug‑spray, Stanley must exterminate the bees and other critters on each screen. By spraying the bugs and the angry Donkey Kong himself, he chases the primate away before the flowers are devoured. The level is cleared once every insect has been eliminated, allowing Stanley to move on to the next garden.
