Summary
Die Hard Arcade (known in Japan as Dynamite Deka) feels like a 3‑D side‑scroll brawler that borrowed the depth of a fighting game. The graphics were a first for the genre, using texture‑mapped polygons that made every punch, kick and weapon swing look surprisingly solid for its time. Even though the characters move along a single plane, the move set is surprisingly rich – you can chain combos, grab enemies, and even pull off joint special attacks in two‑player mode.
What really sets the game apart is the sheer variety of armaments you can snatch from foes or the environment. From everyday items like brooms and pepper shakers to missile launchers and anti‑tank cannons, the arsenal feels improvised and chaotic, and you can even fuse objects (a spray bottle plus a lighter becomes a flamethrower). Quick‑time events pepper the action, forcing you to hit a button or direction at the right moment; failing either costs health or throws you into an extra, often humorous, set‑piece. Handguns stick around as long as you have ammo, while most other weapons disappear after each scripted scene.
The arcade cabinet itself was a fully plastic, eye‑catching unit that drew crowds, and the game quickly rose to the top of Japanese arcade charts. Developed by Sega’s AM1 team in partnership with the US‑based Sega Technical Institute, it became the most successful US‑produced Sega arcade title of its era. Its blend of over‑the‑top violence, cooperative combos, and inventive weapon play earned it a cult following that later spawned the sequel Dynamite Cop.
Storyline
In Die Hard Arcade, players take the roles of SWAT operatives John McClane and Kris Thompsen, tasked with rescuing the President’s daughter, Caroline Powell, from a heavily armed terrorist gang inside a towering skyscraper. The duo battles through a series of themed floors, confronting a colorful roster of henchmen – a biker named Hog, a Mexican wrestler Jocko, the sumo‑wrestler Mr. Oishi paired with General Mr. Tubbs, a grenade‑toting fire chief, and laser‑shooting Spiderbots – before finally facing the mastermind Wolf “White Fang” Hongo twice, first in his office and then on the rooftop. After the final defeat, Caroline thanks the rescuers. In single‑player mode the game ends there; in two‑player mode she asks one of them to become her bodyguard, prompting a rooftop duel. If time expires the match is declared a draw, and the game concludes regardless.
