Summary
Chain Reaction is the North American arcade spin on Data East’s Magical Drop Plus 1!, hitting cabinets in November 1995 on the Simple 156 board. Six tarot‑card‑styled characters compete against a rogue AI, ultimately facing a goddess named World, while a single male narrator replaces the original per‑character voice‑overs.
Visually, the game swaps the classic coloured drops for whimsical items—everything from snacks to stars—still collapsing when you line three or more in a column. The core mechanic stays fast‑paced: you snag items at the bottom, fling them upward and rack up "chain reactions" that either boost your score in Solo Play or overwhelm an opponent’s stack in the two‑player Battle mode (CPU or human).
The update introduced a dedicated Solo Play mode that steadily drops new lines, rewarding quick, simultaneous matches, while the competitive Battle mode leans heavily into frantic tug‑of‑war play. It’s a bright, high‑energy puzzle experience that still feels fresh decades later.
Storyline
In Chain Reaction, you pick one of 24 tarot‑card characters. All but the Black Pierrot carry the name of a tarot card, and the Strength card appears twice in the roster. Each fighter has its own attack pattern, which changes how the opponent’s stack falls. For instance, Devil makes every column drop at the same speed, while Sun speeds up the middle columns. This variety creates color disjunctions that can trip up the opponent.
The game’s core mode has you face a line‑up of computer opponents, each match tougher than the last. As you clear stacks, the opponents’ columns descend at rates unique to the character you selected, forcing you to adapt your strategy. The differing descent speeds add a tactical layer beyond simple matching.
After surviving the escalating battles, the final showdown pits you against the goddess World, concluding the tarot‑themed quest.
