Summary
Burning Fight dropped on SNK’s Neo Geo MVS arcade board, aiming straight at the Double‑Dragon craze of the early ’90s. The roster is a quirky blend of East‑West cops—NYPD detectives Duke and Billy join forces with Ryu, a martial‑arts‑trained officer from Osaka—giving players a familiar beat‑‘em‑up formula with an international twist. Levels sprint through a stylised Osaka, complete with destructible phone booths and street signs, while weapons litter the ground for extra punch. The game’s production bears the Kawasaki stamp; co‑founder Eikichi Kawasaki, later behind Fatal Fury and Samurai Shodown, helmed the project. In June 1991 Japanese arcade rankings listed it eighth (Game Machine) and even second (RePlay), though critics have generally been lukewarm, often noting it pales next to its genre giants. Still, fans of classic side‑scrollers enjoy the blend of gritty detective tropes and arcade brawling that Burning Fight delivers.
Storyline
In Burning Fight, NYPD detectives Duke Edwards and Billy King chase a ruthless Japanese crime syndicate. Their investigation drags them from the gritty streets of New York to the neon‑lit alleys of Japan. There they encounter Ryu Saeba, a disciplined police officer and martial‑arts specialist who agrees to lend his skills to the American duo. United by a common goal, the three form an unlikely partnership, combining street‑wise detective work with hand‑to‑hand combat. Together they hunt down the syndicate’s bosses, aiming to end the terror that threatens both continents.
