Summary

Breakers lets you pick from eight uniquely styled characters, each boasting personal moves and special attacks. The arcade mode strings eight stages together, with two battles per stage and a decisive third bout if the first two end in a draw. A time‑limit defeat flips the winner to the fighter with more remaining energy, and clearing the eight stages pits you against a considerably tougher final challenger, while each roster pick unlocks its own ending dialogue.

The control feel leans on SNK’s Fatal Fury lineage—dash, back‑step and even floor‑rolling differ between fighters, and you can hop back to your feet after a knock‑down. Damage‑adjustment tech keeps spamming in check, while a three‑tier power gauge charges through taunts, dashes or rolls, allowing spectacular super‑move combos.

Breakers Revenge added new fighter Saizo, made boss Bai‑Hu playable, refreshed lifebars and trimmed stage graphics. Revenge Chicago later introduced a hidden Extra mode, a “Chicago” playstyle, new HUD elements, an arranged soundtrack by Kenichi Kamio, and manga‑artist Motoki Yoshihara wallpapers.

Though Game Machine listed it thirteenth in January 1997, the title cultivated a cult following, and a fresh sequel was announced for arcade release at EVO Japan 2024.

Storyline

Breakers drops you into a grim Hong Kong courtyard where the Fighting Instinct Tournament (FIST) rages. The secretive event is run by an evil spirit possessing the head of the Huang Financial Clique, and only the final challenger lives to face the mastermind for a massive prize.

You can choose from a roster of colorful fighters: Sho Kamui, a Japanese karate prodigy; his Korean rival Lee Dao‑Long, who uses the Empty Fist style; kick‑queen Tia Langray hunting for her missing brother; Italian noble Pielle Montario with a lightning‑charged rapier; Native‑American grappler Condor Heads; fire‑wielding Sheik Maherl; Amazonian claw‑fighter Rila Estansia; and undead Egyptian Alsion III, who attacks with electricity and poison. The ultimate foe is Huang Bai‑Hu, the spirit‑possessed champion who killed Dao‑Long’s father.

Each character also has a hidden “clone” alter‑ego—Jin Sawamura, Wáng Liu‑Khai, Shelly Tarlar, and others—who carry unique gems and back‑stories. In the sequel, Breakers Revenge, a new ninja Saizo Tobikageno joins the fray to avenge his clan.
