Summary
Bonze Adventure lets you take the role of Bonze Kackremboh, a Buddhist monk wielding his mala prayer beads as a weapon. By collecting power‑ups the beads grow until they dwarf the monk, blasting snakes, ghostly eyes and other supernatural foes across richly painted stages. Whenever the action gets tough, a friendly deva appears to grant temporary bonuses, while the game's quirky timer melts away like candles, adding pressure without a traditional countdown.
The arcade original, produced by Taito, earned enough buzz to be listed as the third‑most‑successful table unit in Japan’s July 1988 arcade rankings. Its blend of quirky mythology, vivid visuals and inventive power‑up system still draws interest from retro enthusiasts seeking an offbeat platform challenge.
Storyline
Bonze Adventure puts you in the shoes of Bonze Kackremboh, a Buddhist priest and the son of the Divine Dragon. The underworld has fallen into chaos because Emma the King has lost his senses, allowing yokai to roam unchecked. Kackremboh must trek through twisted realms to locate Emma and restore order. Along the way he battles endless waves of classic Japanese spirits – slithering snakes, floating giant eyeballs, restless ghosts, mischievous kitsune, crawling spiders, and eerie hitodama that flicker like will‑o‑the‑wisps. Each encounter tests his resolve as he fights to seal the darkness and bring the king back to his senses.
