Summary

Battletoads Arcade lets up to three friends pick Rash, Pimple or Zitz and tear through a gauntlet of alien hordes, mutant rodents and even snowmen. Each toad brings a wildly exaggerated signature attack—limbs morph into axes, drills or other crazy weapons—while a quick bite of a flying insect restores health on the fly.

The six stages jump from 2.5‑D brawls to pure side‑scrolling set‑pieces, including a jet‑pack tunnel descent and a final vehicle‑shootout, with a vertical bonus level where you blast a spaceship apart. Enemies can be knocked off‑screen so they appear to fly toward the player, a playful nod that literally breaks the fourth wall.

Rare used its PowerAnimator 3D engine for the first time here, cranking up the gore and decapitation options that could be toggled via DIP switches. Though a Super Nintendo port was scrapped, the arcade original resurfaced in the 2015 Rare Replay collection, now with unlimited continues, rewind and save features.

Storyline

In the arcade classic Battletoads, the heroic trio—Rash, Pimple, and Zitz—are called back into action when the Dark Queen returns. She has taken command of the Galactic Corporation's defense fleet, launching from her massive rocket ship, the Gargantua.

Determined to stop her, the toads battle through six distinct levels, confronting alien forces and mutant rodents. Along the way they face the Queen's familiar henchmen Big Blag and Robo‑Manus, as well as new threats such as General Vermin and Robo Rat. Their mission: save an alternate universe from the Dark Queen's tyranny.
