Summary
Battletoads Arcade – often just called Super Battletoads – lets up to three friends step into the shoes of Rash, Pimple or Zitz and mash an eight‑directional stick with an attack and jump button. Each toad feels distinct: Rash darts around, Pimple swarms like a bulldozer and Zitz strikes a middle ground, while their signature moves literally morph arms into axes, drills or other oversized weapons. The game isn’t shy about gore; decapitations and splatter are visible unless the operator flips the DIP switch, a freedom Rare could finally embrace because the cabinet never headed for a home console.
Six wildly themed stages roll from 2.5‑D brawls to vertical jet‑pack tunnels, even a vehicular showdown at the end, and bonus rooms let you demolish an enemy mothership. Enemies range from alien soldiers to mutant rodents and quirky snowmen, and the toads can snatch flies to replenish health. Powered by Rare’s PowerAnimator 3‑D engine – the same tech that later birthed Donkey Kong Country – the arcade version was a first for the studio. Although an SNES port never saw daylight, the title resurfaced in 2015’s Rare Replay on Xbox One, bringing rewinds, unlimited continues and save‑state magic to a whole new generation.
Storyline
The arcade classic Battletoads pits Rash, Pimple and Zitz against the scheming Dark Queen. She returns aboard the Gargantua, a massive rocket attached to the Galactic Corporation’s defense fleet, and has gathered new henchmen such as General Vermin and Robo‑Rat in addition to the familiar Big Blag and Robo‑Manus. The trio battles through six distinct levels, fighting alien forces and mutant rodents that block their path. Their mission is to stop the Dark Queen’s latest plot and save an alternate universe from her tyrannical rule.
