Battletoads Arcade (often just called Battletoads) feels like a noisy, quarter‑pumping blast from the mid‑90s. Up to three friends can pick Rash, the quick‑draw lean fighter, Zitz, the balanced brain, or Pimple, the hulking powerhouse, each wielding a signature attack that can even turn limbs into axes or drills. The game’s most satisfying trick is sending enemies flying off‑screen, literally breaking the fourth wall, while a quick tongue‑snatch of flies restores your health.

Every stage flips the formula on its head: some are 2.5‑D brawls reminiscent of Double Dragon, others are pure 2‑D beat‑em‑ups where you can duck, and there’s even a jet‑pack tunnel and a final vehicle‑shooting segment that lets you fire four different guns. A bonus level lets you smash a spaceship, and a DIP switch lets arcade owners toggle the over‑the‑top gore—decapitations and blood can be turned off for a cleaner arcade experience.

Technically, it was Rare’s first foray into PowerAnimator 3D tech, using the TMS34020 CPU and a Data East BSMT2000 sound chip usually found in pinball machines. Though a Super Nintendo port was scrapped, the title resurfaced in the 2015 Rare Replay collection on Xbox One, complete with unlimited continues and a rewind feature, giving a new generation a chance to feel the original’s chaotic charm.

Storyline

In the arcade hit Battletoads, the trio—Rash, Pimple and Zitz—are no longer ordinary joes. A bizarre accident turned them into the amphibian heroes tasked with protecting an alternate universe. Their nemesis is the Dark Queen, who now commands the Galactic Corporation’s defense fleet from her massive rocket, the Gargantua.

The toads must battle through six action‑packed levels, taking on alien forces, mutant rodents and a roster of villains. Alongside classic henchmen Big Blag and Robo‑Manus, the Queen has bolstered her army with General Vermin and Robo Rat. With cartoon‑style mayhem, Rash, Pimple and Zitz fight rats, critters and near‑invincible foes to stop the Dark Queen’s scheme.
