Summary

Batsugun blew onto the arcade scene as Toaplan’s swan‑song, paving the way for today’s bullet‑hell shooters. Its hallmark is a tiny hitbox and a fire‑power system that actually levels up: each enemy destroyed adds experience, boosting the main gun until it maxes out, then granting extra bombs. Players can pick from three distinct ship variants—rapid‑fire Sky Mirage, beam‑focused Dragon’s Whisper, or adaptable Judgement Flasher—each gaining strength as it levels. The game also rewards skillful play with hidden medals, bomb‑point zones and a respawn system that places you back at the point of death, raising the stakes on every pass. After the original’s arcade run, a “Special Version” added a shield, tighter hitbox and multiple difficulty loops, and the 2023 EXA Label revival restored all pilots, introduced voice work, and refined input lag to one frame, underscoring Batsugun’s lasting influence on the manic‑shooter sub‑genre.

Storyline

Batsugun’s storyline unfolds on a distant Earth‑like planet where the tyrant king Renoselva A. Gladebaran VII initiates the Epsilon Plan, a rapid global takeover that sees the Imperial Army staging coups across the world in under two weeks. The only force standing between his military might and total domination is the elite squadron known as the Skull Hornets, commanded by his own son, Prince Olisis R. Gladebaran VIII. The Hornets fly the planet’s most advanced submersible jets, striking from both sky and sea.

The squadron consists of six pilots, each assigned to a specific ship type. Jeeno pilots the Type A (P1) craft; he is a teenage soldier enhanced with cybernetic implants by Dr. Gabriel. Schneider, the Type A (P2) pilot, is a veteran who survived cryogenic suspension and previously starred in Flying Shark. Beltiana flies the Type B (P1) jet, seeking revenge for her brother’s death, while the tomboyish mechanic Alteeno handles the Type B (P2) craft.

Iceman, a mercenary with a turbulent past, pilots the Type C (P1) ship, and Prince Olisis himself flies the Type C (P2) jet, hoping to overthrow his father and end the Epsilon Plan.
