Summary
In Ashita no Joe (also called Tomorrow's Joe) you step into the gloves of Joe Yabuki, a scrappy kid from the rough side of town who dreams of becoming a boxing champion. The game blends classic beat‑'em‑up action with ring‑side bouts: you’ll trash‑talk bullies in dim back‑alley corridors one moment, then slip into a squared‑off boxing ring the next, feeling the grind of training and the rush of a title fight. The arcade saw two distinct releases – Taito’s original Tomorrow’s Joe, built by Wave Corp in 1990, and Konami’s later Boxing Mania: Tomorrow’s Joe in 2001 – each preserving the gritty street‑to‑glory narrative while updating the controls and visual flair. I love how the title captures that raw, underdog spirit, letting players experience the same climb from unknown rookie to champion that made the original manga such a legend.
Storyline
Ashita no Joe on Arcade follows the rise of Joe Yabuki, a street‑wise drifter who is discovered by former trainer Danpei Tange in the San'ya slums. After a brief stint in a juvenile detention center, where he clashes with former prodigy Rikiishi, Joe and Rikiishi vow to settle their rivalry in the professional ring.
Back on the streets, Joe joins Danpei’s tiny gym and quickly becomes a fan favorite thanks to his wild brawling style and signature cross‑counter knockouts. He finally earns a professional license by provoking champion Wolf Kanagushi and beating him with a triple cross‑counter, setting up a high‑stakes bout against Rikiishi.
Rikiishi, backed by millionaire Mikinosuke Shiraki, drops to a lower weight class to face Joe. The fight ends with Rikiishi knocking Joe out in the eighth round, but the former prodigy later dies from the strain of weight loss and a brain hemorrhage sustained during the match, leaving Joe traumatized.
Joe’s career spirals as he loses three fights, disappears into an illegal countryside ring, and later returns to face Carlos Rivera, a world‑ranked opponent managed by Shiraki’s granddaughter Yoko. The bout devolves into a brawl, earning Joe massive fame and a friendship with Carlos, who later suffers severe brain damage after a loss to world champion Jos Mendoza.
In the climactic showdown, Joe challenges Mendoza for the world title in a packed Tokyo stadium. Despite being diagnosed with punch‑drunk syndrome and losing vision in one eye, Joe endures fifteen brutal rounds, ultimately losing on points while Mendoza’s hair turns white from the trauma. The game ends with Joe sitting unresponsive yet smiling, having given his gloves to Yoko and declaring that everything has "burnt to ashes."
