Summary
Altered Beast still feels like a neon‑lit flashback to the golden age of arcade beat‑'em‑ups. Zeus' thunderous "Awaken, dead warrior!" sets you on a sprint through mythic stages where punch, kick and jump feel weighty enough to make each monster tumble. The core loop revolves around snagging white two‑headed wolves that drop Spirit Balls; collect three and you burst into one of five beast forms—dragon, bear, tiger, wolf or golden wolf—each packing its own projectile or power‑boost, turning the platforming gauntlet into a roaring showcase of sprite‑level detail.
The game’s look is pure System 16 magic: gigantic, limb‑slicing sprites that gleam under a deliberately flashy lighting scheme, a result of Makoto Uchida’s push for eye‑popping transformations after he drew inspiration from Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” video and classic Ray Harryhausen monsters. Hidden nods to Alex Kidd and Shinobi reward long‑time Sega fans. Even three decades later, you can still hear the hiss of an arcade crowd when people line up for the still‑beloved “rise from your grave” moment, proving that a solid blend of mythology, monster‑morphing and pure arcade guts never grows old.
Storyline
Altered Beast (arcade) drops you into an Ancient‑Greek myth where Zeus revives a dead Roman centurion and tasks him with rescuing his daughter Athena from the demon ruler Neff of the Underworld. Between each stage brief cut‑scenes show Athena’s plight as the hero battles through graveyards filled with zombies and winged demons, then descends deeper into the Underworld’s caverns of leeches, dragon‑headed rattlesnakes and chicken‑stinger foes.
By absorbing spirit balls the centurion can transform – first into a werewolf to face Neff as Aggar, later into a thunder‑dragon, a bear, a tiger and finally a golden werewolf for the final showdown against Neff’s rhinoceros‑man form. Each transformation gives him the strength to defeat the ever‑changing monster, though Neff always escapes to the next arena.
The arcade’s ending rolls over live‑action footage of actors in costume, revealing that the whole adventure was presented as a staged film, and ends with Athena emerging from a blue bird and thanking her lycanthropic hero.
