Summary
Alpha Mission thrills as a vertical scrolling shooter that splits its firepower between lasers for airborne foes and missiles that hunt down ground targets, a design choice that sets it apart from its contemporaries like Xevious. The ship can be tuned up with power‑ups that boost its arsenal, yet every time you get destroyed you lose those upgrades and resume a short distance before the crash—adding a tense balance of risk and reward.
Despite its modest profile here, the title was a hit across Japan’s arcades, ranking as the second most successful table cabinet in November 1985 and ending 1986 as the seventh highest‑grossing table game of the year. That strong performance earned it a sequel, Alpha Mission II, on the Neo Geo platform in 1991. The game’s split‑weapon mechanic and frantic boss battles still feel fresh, making it a hidden gem worth seeking out for fans of classic shmups.
Storyline
Alpha Mission offers a blunt arcade premise: you pilot a lone ship through a series of threatened space stations. Each level pits you against waves of enemies that swarm the station’s corridors, and a boss awaits at the end of every stage. Defeating the boss is the only way to unlock the next station and keep the fight moving forward. Along the way you can grab power‑ups, upgrades, and new weapons to boost your firepower. However, any of those enhancements vanish the moment you lose a life, forcing you to start each run from scratch.
